Just A Farmer Poem
“Just a farmer,” you said,
And I laughed ’cause I knew
All the things that farmers
Must be able to do.
They must study the land,
Then watch the sky
And figure just when
Is the right time and why-
To sow and to plant
To buy and to sell
To go to the market
With cattle and well –
You know the books
That farmers must keep
To pay all those taxes
And be able to sleep.
And you know the fixin’
That farmers must do
When machines like mad monsters
Blow a gasket or two
I guess when God needed
Folks to care for His earth
He chose “just farmers”

Al Siddoway is a local farmer, growing wheat, potatoes, barley and more in the Teton Valley. Although farming is a lot about the earth, it is also intrinsically about the sky. What weather is coming, what the wind might bring, how it shapes each day's work.
Driving out to farmland, work, and riding his open cab tractor constantly gives Al the opportunity to study the sky and although it could be seen as "just part of the job" Al sees it differently. Every time he looks up at the sky he sees stories, and beauty, and splendor. These views sometimes last only a moment or two before the sun shifts and the sky changes completely, but Al finds himself drawn to capture these fleeting moments and stories through photography. Climbing on top his tractor, pulling over for a flower in the sunset, waiting and watching a rain front sweep the valley, He tries to capture something special about each day.
When asked to describe himself, he says "I'm just a farmer, taking crazy pictures." In the same breath he encourages people to just look up, says there is always something amazing in the sky. Just as our farmers share their harvest, Al floods the online community with his local big sky photography, sharing on as many platforms as possible including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and forums just for cloud enthusiasts. Yes, he might be just a farmer, but he is also an artist sharing his creative journey with the world.
